The portfolio soared. Feeling free took much longer.

2021–2026

u/FIFO-for-LIFO’s wealth raced past the original goal, helped heavily by concentrated technology-stock gains. Emotional confidence moved more slowly. The updates trace anxiety about a closed career door, a working partner’s different schedule and the effort to spend more freely. Five years on, art, languages and chosen consulting were helping replace the identity that money alone could not retire.

He sold the company. It took years to stop being its founder.

2024–2026

A large startup exit did not end u/h2m3m’s work habit. He started another company, burned out again and finally stepped away. Later updates trace the harder separation: losing the old professional identity and finding satisfaction in woodworking, teaching, golf and time with his children. By the third-year update, even his LinkedIn profile was gone.

He escaped the grind. Then learned to stop optimizing every day.

2019–2026

At 35, u/hungn3 left consulting with $1.1 million and discovered that freedom still needed a little structure. Board games, climbing and volunteering became anchors. Seven years later, the story includes ambitious travel, new hobbies and a relationship that ended without costing him a friendship. The achievement is a life with room to keep changing.

Privacy & analytics

AfterFire uses Google Analytics to understand visits, referral sources, pages and posts people open, filter use, and clicks to original sources.

Analytics is on by default for visitors in the United States. You can turn it off at any time using Privacy & choices in the footer. Elsewhere, or when we cannot determine your country, Analytics stays off until you allow it. We honor saved opt-outs, Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track signals. Our hosting provider determines your country; we do not save the country check or send it to Google.

When Analytics is on, Google receives page titles and addresses without query strings, content and post IDs, filter names (not selected values or search terms), campaign source/medium/name tags from shared links, original-source domains, referring sites, approximate location and browser/device information. Analytics cookies distinguish browsers and visits. Campaign labels are stored in this tab only while Analytics is on and expire after 30 minutes without activity. We do not enable advertising personalization or Google Signals, or send your name, email address or account identifier to Analytics.

Turning Analytics off stops tracking, clears this site's Analytics cookies and reloads the page. While off, no Analytics data is sent to Google. Turning it on starts with the page currently open; we do not replay earlier browsing. Changing your choice does not delete measurements already received by Google.

We remember your choice on this browser for up to six months. Analytics cookies expire after six months without renewal. Detailed Analytics data is retained for up to 14 months; aggregated reports can remain longer. Site hosting still processes requests needed to serve these pages.
